Best Rome Attractions for Free

Behold the Pantheon

Originally designed as a temple to the Roman Gods, the Pantheon in more recent times has served as a Christian church. An imposing building and something of an architectural marvel, this is one of Rome’s top attractions, for free and otherwise. Hang out in the Piazza outside in the evenings for some great music, excellent bites and check out the excellent gelato stores in the neighborhood.

Visit the Trastevere

Nicknamed the “Italian Quarters”, the old cobbled streets are a pleasure to stroll through while imagining the Rome of yore. Located on the wrong side of the Tiber for most tourists, this location is often ignored but put it on the top of your list because for many, it is their favorite Rome attraction for free.

Enjoy a Vatican Bonanza

Though the Vatican can be rather pricey to visit otherwise, the last Sunday of the month allows free entry for all. When you tire of the hoards and museums, head to St. Peter’s Basilica around the corner (also free) for a look at the greatest church in Christendom and hang out in the famous square for some rest. Don’t forget to re-visit the square on a Wednesday morning for an audience with the Pope.
Toss your lucre into the Trevi Fountain
Buy yourself a return ticket to the Eternal City with a simple toss of a coin into this fountain. If the thought of tossing your money anywhere affronts you, then simply visit the fountains for a magnificent view of Neptune’s chariot drawn by sea horses and the soothing sounds of the waters flowing.

Park yourself in a Piazza

Rome abounds with beautiful squares where for the price of nothing, you could spend a wonderful few hours looking at stall-keepers wears, watching artists at work and see the whole of Rome stroll by. The backdrop is gorgeous anytime of the day but some of the Piazzas like Campo dei Fiori are best visited while the market is in full swing.
Test yourself at the Bocca Della Verita
Only if you are willing to prove your veracity, place your hand in the mouth of the carving for liars will have their hand bitten off! Translating to “Mouth of Truth” the Bocca Della Verita was actually a sewer but the human visage like carving spawned this legend over time.
Escape to the Villa Borghese
Standing on the grounds of a palace is one of Rome’s largest public parks. A fantastic escape from the heat and hum of the city, you could enjoy a picnic, walk around the gazebos or just take a quick nap. The grounds also house a number of museums where you can view some of Italy’s masterpieces for a price, but the gardens alone are well worth a visit.
