Nuremberg Attractions in Germany– a Brief Summary

Nuremberg in GermanyNuremberg is located in Bavarian Germany and is the second largest city of the region. It has held an important place in history since its founding in the early 11th century. From playing the role of the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire to later becoming centre stage for important Nazi rallies and laws, Nuremberg has had a rich and varied past. Visitors to the city, especially history, architecture and nature enthusiasts, will find plenty of things to do in Nuremberg.

Hauptmarkt Nuremberg

Like all central squares in Europe, Hauptmarkt lies at the heart of the city and is the scene of numerous daily markets year long. It is particularly famous for its Christmas Market titled Christkindlesmarkt which opens in late November and draws tourists from all over the world. Hauptmarkt is also where tourists gather every afternoon near the western façade, to witness mechanical figures doing a pretty twirly dance around Emperor Karl in tune to beautiful chimed music.

Nuremberg Trials Courthouse

When WWII ended, the Allies chose Nuremberg to host the War Crimes Tribunal because of the role it had played in the Nazi activities. Visitors can sit in the very courthouse where the trials were held and let the audio guides describe to them the scene, happenings and atmosphere from those dark days. The attic houses a seemingly small but extremely detailed museum showcasing important events related to the courthouse, and with a clever use of pictures, documents and audio tapes, bring events of the day to life for all visitors.

Dokumentationszentrum

One of the top Nuremberg attractions, the Dokumentationszentrum is a detailed presentation of the history of Hitler’s rise to power, the forming of the Nazi party, their activities in Nuremberg and beyond, a summary of the war, the Nuremberg trials and the post-war analysis. It would be a good idea for history buffs to begin their tour of the city here as it gives important background to the roles of the party grounds and the Nuremberg trials in context to World War II.
Historischer Kunstbunker

The Historischer Kunstbunker gives you a chance to finally view one of the many climate controlled underground bunkers Hitler used during World War II to keep treasure troves of art safe during the course of the war.
