Berlin oberbaumbruckeBerlin is the liveliest city of Germany with new attractions every day. As the capital city of Germany it has a population of more than 3 million people. The city is located on the banks of the River Spree. You can easily get there by plane, because Berlin has two airports, but the long-distance rail lines connect many cities in neighboring European countries as well. The public transportation in the city is highly complex and modern. Berlin attracts thousands of tourists every year. Why is this city so popular? Let’s see the main attractions!

Berlin’s history has left an eclectic array of architecture and buildings. The city still has two sides. The west embraces alternative lifestyles with vibrant nightlife, and the east is like a journey through the remains of the socialist experiment. The Berlin Wall, which separated the city to an eastern and western part, was the symbol of the Cold War. The East Side Gallery is more than one kilometer long, and this part of the Wall is still standing.

Brandenburg GateThe Reichstag is the seat of the German Parliament. In 1933 fire broke out in the building and destroying much of it. The renovation was completed in 1999. The Reichstag is close to the Brandenburg Gate, which is a monumental gate, built in the 18th century as a symbol of peace. The Holocaust Memorial can be visited anytime, night or day. It was designed to commemorate the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust. The Checkpoint Charlie was the border crossing for the three Berlins. Now it is a monument to the once separated city.

The Berliner Dome is located on an island in the river Spree, also known as a Museum Island. The Dome is a Baroque cathedral, built between 1894 and 1905. Berlin’s Museum Island includes five museums: the Old National Gallery, the Old Museum, the Bode Museum, the Neues Museum and the Pergamon Museum. There are also many other important buildings on the island, such as the Stadtschloss, which is a beautiful 19th century palace.

The Berliner Fernsehturm is located in the center of Berlin. This is a 368 meter tall television tower. From the top of the tower you have a wide view over the whole city. The Berlin Zoo, also known as the Tiergarten, is one of the largest zoos in the world. It represents about 1400 species from all continents. The Potsdamer Platz is great tourist attraction as well. This is the busiest crossing in Europe, full of modern buildings. The Charlottenburg Palace is a baroque palace in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district. The palace is worth visiting because it includes a wonderful park as well.

The Sanssoucci Park is only 24 kilometers from Berlin, located in Potsdam. The large park contains several sights, but the most famous is the Schloss Sanssoucci. The palace consists of several different gardens, statues and fountains. One of the newest attractions includes the Sehitlik mosque, which is opened in 2005. Berlin is a modern and ever-changing city, where every visitor discovers something new!
