Split is Croatia's second largest port and one of the Adriatic Sea's most incredible ports. When you land on this port, it is not just the amazing historical monuments, galleries, and museums that make it a worthwhile trip, but you also have the opportunity to visit some of the best beaches of the idyllic Adriatic Islands. Split, Croatia was an important city within Yugoslavia, and after World War II, it became a part of Croatia. The city gets its fame mostly from the Palace of the Roman Emperor, Diocletian and the other wonders related to it and around it.

Split, Croatia has some of the best sights you will ever see. These spectacles are sure to leave a lasting impression on your mind. When you visit Split, you will carry a part of it back with you.

The Cathedral of St Domnius: This cathedral was built at the same time as the Diocletian's Palace. It was built as a tomb for Emperor Diocletian (a few centuries later, his ashes had mysteriously disappeared from the tomb). Later in the 7th century, the people who had fled the attack on the nearby Salona converted this crypt into a cathedral and made it the resting place of their Bishop, Domnius by placing his bones here. The bishop was executed by the order of Diocletian himself. Diocletian's Palace: This palace was built by Emperor Diocletian to serve as his retirement abode. The palace is an irregular rectangle with towers on the northern, eastern, and western facades. The palace could accommodate 9000 people and was a structure that spelt luxury. The design of the palace is a combination of the castrum and villa. This palace is one of the most important sights in Split, Croatia. You can also get an English guidebook locally-published that describes the structure. The main open space of the palace is the Peristyle and you will find the cathedral on its eastern side.

Split Landmarks

People's Square: The 5th century People's Square is the old town hall located on the western side of the palace. An ethnographic museum is also present in the town hall and a place you must visit. It was set up in 1910.

Statue of Gregory of Nin: The extraordinary statue of Gregory of Nin is one of the most visited sites in Split, Croatia. The statue of this Croatian religious leader, Grgur Ninski was made by Ivan Mestrovic; its left big tow was sculpted in gold. Rubbing this toe is said to bring luck.

Mestrovic Gallery: The sculptor of the statue of the Gregory of Nin had also designed this villa as his summer residence. More than 200 works of art of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic are displayed here. Mestrovic designed the villa in 1939 and it was opened as a gallery in 1952.

Museums: Some of the popular museums are the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, the Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Croatia.
