Best of Things to Do in Salzburg
Ride up to the Untensburg
A steep cable car ride takes you to the absolute top of this mountain, affording breathtaking views of the mountain, the valley and the city of
Salzburg below. While the cable car platform itself offers excellent vistas, visitors must explore beyond for there are excellent walking and hiking trails available in almost every direction and one right up to the peak. There are several designated spots for the best views and your photographs are guaranteed to please, so don’t miss out on this thing to do in Salzburg.
Taste the Mozartkugel and Pretzel
A chocolate, marzipan and nougat concoction, the MozartKugel is dedicated to the man who put Salzburg on the map and is available abundantly in the confectionary shops across Salzburg. If sweet is not your thing, you could alternatively try out the giant sized pretzels served with all kinds of fillings and toppings, turning this ordinary snack into a full blown meal for most visitors.
Enjoy a Classical Concert
Salzburg is awash with strains of music and it would be a pity to visit the city without taking in a full blown classical concert. Both of Salzburg’s palaces, the Mirabell and the Festung Hohensalzburg, offer excellent concerts amidst charming settings most evenings but you can also find several other equally enjoyable productions around town for a lesser price.
Take a Sound of Music Tour
Astoundingly, many of the locals in Salzburg have never seen the Sound of Music and have heard of the classic only because visitors talk incessantly about it. Don’t let their amusement deter you from strolling the Mirabell gardens where Do-Re-Mi was filmed or take a picture with Liesl and Franz’s beautiful pavilion, all the while belting out your favorite tunes of course. Several of the other famous film sites are scattered away from the city so you may have to sign up for a private tour to take in the full package.
Pay homage to Mozart
No list of things to do in Salzburg is complete without paying your respects to Wolfgang. The city is proud to be his birthplace and has converted his childhood home into a museum dedicated to his life and mementos. One can also see the house he resided and composed in during his late teens and enjoy concerts of his music in several music halls around town.
Visit the Salt Mines
The Salzwelten
SalzBurg helps you experience the very salt mines from which the city derives its name and its historic wealth. One of the world’s oldest salt mines takes you on a ride through narrow mountain tunnels criss-crossing between
Germany and
Austria, following the very routes the miners of the past journeyed through on their hunt for the "white gold".
